3D Olympics

For the last couple of weeks, we have been talking about and looking at a variety of 3D shapes including cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders, and pyramids.  There are all sorts of things in our classroom and Learning commons that come in these shapes.

Today, on top of skating (more pictures to come next week), today we had some 3D Olympics.  Working as a team we had a basket of things to sort by 3D shape.  We used their proper names as we worked.  Gold medals were awarded for team work, quickest sorting, and use of proper vocabulary.  We all came away as winners!!

Take a look around your kitchen, bedroom, or bedroom and see what kind of 3D shapes you can find.  Have your own sorting 3D Olympics as a family for some inside fun this weekend!

If You Give A...

We have been enjoying the series If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff.  The children have noticed the pattern that she finishes the books with the same thing that they started with, called a circle story.  We have enjoyed them so much that we have started coming up with some of our own titles and book covers.  We used a mix of our sight words and kid writing to go in our journals.

Hello Parents,

Alien In-Line Skating

The next few weeks are a fun time at Beddington Heights as we welcome the Alien In-Line Skating program!  Each of our Kindergarten classes have six turns in the gym.  The program provides all the equipment that we need including kneepads, elbow and wrist guards, skates and helmets.  If you wish to send your child’s personal helmet from home you are welcome.  Please label it, as we will keep them in the classroom for the two weeks.  Just a reminder, if I have not received a permission form for your child, due to school policy your child will not be able to skate until it has been signed and returned.

Letter  Oo

This week we will look at the letter ‘Oo’.  Vowels are really fun letter because they make two sounds! When letter Oo is long, it says its name like the word open, and short letter Oo makes the sound at the beginning of octopusHere is the link to the interactive fun at Starfall.com.

Hello Parents,

Alien Inline Skating forms have gone home.  We have the opportunity as a school to participate in this program next week.  Due to our photocopier being broken last week, we were late getting the permission forms home.  They must be signed and returned before children can participate in the class, along with the $10.  Please return by Wednesday of this week.

We are working on 'Vv' words that start with the sound /v/ for Valentine's this week!
Check out the Letter Vv Song on Youtube!

Lock Down Practice
The school will be practicing our Lockdown procedures this Tuesday.  Due to the timing with our S4 Police Officer, Kindergarten will not practice at the same time as all other students.  We will do our own drill during the day.  A lock down drill is a school safety practice that ensures that all individuals in the school are safe during emergent events such as an intruder or outside threat.  The procedure follows policies set by the CBE, that include closing and locking the classroom doors and ensuring the security of students and staff.

Pillars of Care in February

Dear Parents,

As Valentine’s Day approaches this February, we are building our understanding of the pillar of Care for Others through discussions about compliments and kind deeds.  In an effort to go green and take Care of this Place, this year we will not be exchanging Valentines cards en mass.  Instead, we will be drawing a “compliment buddy” from the class who we will offer compliments and kind deeds towards for the rest of the week.  With our Care of Learning, we will create a special “Math Valentine” for our buddy in class to send home next Wednesday.  As well, we will be creating a special craft to take home to our families.  As  we Care for Ourselves, we are continuing our discussion about healthy fuel for our bodies and brains, we kindly ask that no treats be sent into the classroom for Valentine’s Day.

A reminder that next week there is no school on February13 & 14 for Teachers' Convention and on February 17 for Family Day.  Enjoy the weekend with your family!

Yoga Stories
We enjoyed a yoga break today in the classroom.  We had a fun story meeting Pedro the Penguin from Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube.  With all of this cold weather, it is hard to get out and play, but there are lots of fun ideas to get active inside!  Feel free to check this YouTube account out if you find yourself stuck with nothing to do.

Hh

This week we are building a list of 'Hh' words that start with the sound /h/.  Did you know that "you can feel the H when you say it! Just put your hand by your mouth!"

We had a great list of things we like from our own heads:

- Harvey the Hound
- The Hulk
- Hawkeye (from the Avengers)
- Human Torch (Fantastic Four)
- Thor's hammer
- Hot dogs and hamburgers (there was a lengthy debate about which is better)
- High five
- Hi!  Hello!  Hey!

Check out the Storybots for some more hilarious Hh words!
